LANDSCAPE DESIGN IN PERTH: POINTS TO CONSIDER

Have you decided to design your own garden? Good for you! It’s really satisfying to put your own stamp on a place where you spend a lot of time.

But before you start, there are a few things you need to think about when it comes to landscape design in Perth.  You need a functional garden that suits our climate, potential planning approval… and don’t forget reticulation!

Here are some points to consider when designing your garden…

Choose plants which suit Perth’s mediterranean climate

Perth is fairly cold and wet during the winter… but VERY hot and dry during the summer.

The high temperatures during the warmer months can kill many a plant.

We advise that you choose water saving and drought-tolerant plants – either those native to Western Australia (such as Geraldton Wax), or those which are originally from similar climates, such as South Africa or the Mediterranean.

WaterCorp has a great directory of waterwise plants – pop in your suburb here and you’ll be shown which plants will suit the climate.

Make sure there is adequate reticulation to cover the whole garden

You might be choosing waterwise plants, but you’ll still need reticulation for them, as well as your lawn. It’s really an essential part of landscape design in Perth. Either that or you’re in for a lot of watering by hand! We’ve got some tips here.

Think long term on this one. There will be times, for example, when your garden needs watering when you’re away on holiday. We recommend installing a retic controller so you can set a timer for automatic watering.

Do your research with water pressure and sprinkler heads to make sure that you have your whole garden covered. There are few things more annoying than a dry, brown patch of grass in the middle of the lawn!

Get approval from your local shire for any construction work, such as swimming pools or sheds

If you are planning doing on any kind of construction work in your garden, such as putting in a swimming pool or a shed, you will need to get planning permission from your local shire or risk receiving a hefty fine.

Most shires are pretty helpful with this – the City of Canning, for example, provides a checklist to make sure you have everything you need for a complete application, as well as a planning fees calculator.

Make sure that you get this in well ahead of time, as sometimes approval can take a while.

Do your research with regards to costing

Getting your garden done can be pretty expensive – but it’s not the landscapers being greedy; it’s the cost of materials.

Make a budget and stick to it if you can. It’s easy for landscaping costs to spiral out of control!

When in doubt, hire a professional

Short on time? Not sure which plant should go where? Landscaping design is a big, long-term investment and it’s essential to get it right the first time. An expert on Perth landscape design (cough, cough) will be able to help you get all your ducks in a row and make the whole process much less stressful for you. • We had our entire front Landscaping re-designed by Luke's Landscaping and they did a fantastic job. Works included new front letter box (brick, render, face plate), garden edging, reticulation install (dripper system) and planting design layout. All the trades were easy to deal with and very professional. The whole project was very well run by Allen who always kept us informed with what was happening and when. I would highly recommend.

  • Luke & his team did quite a large landscaping job for us. Lisa came up with a design that we loved & was involved from start to finish. Any little issues that came up along the way were dealt with quickly & efficiently. The quality of Mark’s work & his attention to detail were outstanding. We are thrilled with our new yard & highly recommend Luke’s Landscaping.

  • I used Luke’s Landscaping to provide an overhaul of my front lawn with the task to reduce the amount of lawn and increase the low maintenance area including a rock feature. Also, they were used to provide a major landscaping overhaul for my Daughter’s back garden including lawns, garden beds and low water usage reticulation. All work was carried out within the agreed time schedule. The staff are very accommodating and pleasant to deal with. The work completed with efficiency, and all aspects were well-coordinated. The materials used were of a good quality that enhances the finished product. My daughter and I are very pleased with results.

  • Our front yard in Karrinyup was completely transformed in March 2015. In just one week, the team completed the job of removing what was there, replaced the topsoil, installed the reticulation and mulched with native plants. Four months on we are still so impressed with the job and delighted that we used Luke’s Landscaping. Highly recommended!

  • It was a pleasure working with John and the team to re-create my garden and patio area. John was extremely knowledgeable and offered expert advice. The on site team was professional, friendly and hard working. The site was left immaculate after the work was complete. This was a big job, taking 7 days to do (retaining walls, re-paving, garden, soakwells, reticulation etc) and the result is amazing. If you are looking for a quality, professional well priced job I would recommend you call Luke's Landscaping.

  • Our terrace house had a sad and seldom used rear courtyard which has absolutely no access other than via our living areas. This we thought would be a show-stopper but Luke’s landscaping had the expertise to take it on and swiftly provided us with a lovely design and costed implementation plan, which has simply transformed this area into a valuable extension of our living space. The construction work was carried out most diligently and despite having to transport removed debris, new limestone blocks and pavers, soil, mulch and many plants (including a very large tree) through our home, the professionalism of the whole process and the final cleanup left no sign of the major operation that had been undertaken, either internally or externally. Luke’s follow up on the project to address a couple of small issues has also been most helpful and certainly won’t hesitate in recommending Luke’s landscaping to others who have admired this transformed area! Thankyou.
